Supposed Best Defense

She lives a life of fantasy
Spending her days pretending.
The woman that others know
Is, in part, a facsimile.

Pretense is her best defense
Even though its eroding.
She tries to shore it up,
by pretending even harder.
Collapse is pending, she can’t deny it
Even though she pretends it isn’t.

To be completely free,
No longer spent in hiding
Is something that she longs for.
Yet the terror she thinks freedom offers
Demands she keep pretending.
